Archbishops should be required to remove their mitres

Posted by Rupert Goodwins

We live in a multicultural society. And if that means I can order up a Polish plumber to unblock the bog after it's been clogged with the after-effects of a Turkish kebab, then I'm all for it.

But multiculturalism is a two-way bus lane. I'm happy to doff my silk topper when I'm visiting a lady, a prelate or Canterbury Cathedral, so why shouldn't the Archibishop of Canterbury pay us all the basic respect of pulling off that remarkable bit of medieval headgear when he comes around to visit?

We've had to get the lifts at ZDNet Towers specially modified with a foot-wide notch - not to mention the crozier stands. His Holiness is always welcome here, but he must know that it's not possible to judge the jib of a man's mien without the benefit of clear line of sight to the top of his dome.

It's just common sense.
