I recently spoke with Dr Quentin Stafford-Fraser and John Naughton from the Ndiyo project. In a similar mode to the One Laptop per child project, Ndiyo aims to help the developing world get a technological leg-up. It's basically a way of turning a low-cost Linux PC into a server which then connects with three or four thin client devices. It's a really interesting project which has applications in business too.
