Irrelevant pointless mutterings from modafo....
target="blank" = bad, very bad. Please do not use this.
Irrelevant blurb, not necessarily tech related... I mean, it's not as if i live and breath technology day in day out, 24 7.... I am, after all, just the bottom clog in the corporate mega wheel.
In fact, i doubt this so-called blog will even be:
1. interesting
2. funny and
3. frequently updated.
But thanks for reading nonetheless!

Flash [not in the pan] Video on the web
Anyway, at the time, online video clips were in their own various formats so you had to have all the media players installed on your machine in order to view them, and this got pretty frustrating. Flash was already widely used (but not for displaying video) and it occured to me that using Flash to display video was the way to go.
It would have been interesting if i had stuck with Flash and ActionScripting - instead of following the XHTML/CSS/Web Standards route. I mean, my career path would have went off a completely different route and i probably wouldn't be here typing out this blog entry.
Hmmmm, makes you wonder.....

You can still use be xhtml/css/web standards complient while incorporating flash video on your pages. There are many articles on the topic on A List A Part (e.g. http://www.alistapart.com/articles/flashsatay/ )
So don't give up trying. I've embedded a lot of wmv video files on http://www.boerboel.org.uk
and will be adding flash video for the first time on my blog today (http://www.fromthefrontend.co.uk)
Yes, thanks for the reply David - indeed that alistaprt article on "Flash Satay" is a good read, and very useful too. Funnily enough, i haven't seen many websites - corporate/commercial websites that is - that use it.
I think the reason most corp/comm sites don't use it is because it makes it very easy to grab the flash video either to download and keep/redistribute or to direct link to so that the website is completely ignored. Worse still it could be included as a video clip on another site entirely while still being hosted by the owner.
I think if they included their URL as a footer in the video and used this technique then even if the video is "stolen" and emailed or used on another site it would still reference the original site and help promote it.
I've just included my first flash video in my post about zdnet on my blog. This uses the Flash Satay technique mentioned on a list apart.
I haven't used my own suggestion of adding my url to the footer as yet but will do so at some point (probably when I can drag myself away from ZDNet.co.uk)
