Remember the Web? It was going to make us all golden heroes, sharing information around the world free of interference . Then the squalid toad of Commerce came along and squatted in the middle of the party, demanding to be fed. The toad's waddled off now, still hungry and complaining that it's all nonsense. Which leaves the rest of us free to get on with doing what the Web's good at.

Take ZDNet's news editor, Matt Loney. When not herding the sheep of facts into the pen of publishing for your delight, Matt maintains a strong interest in third-world economics, globalisation and other stuff of importance for the developing world. Not being one of the brick-through-McDonalds mob, he prefers to put his experience to good use by running a web site that brings together news and features at www.kulahost.com It's going through a software update at the moment, but how the man manages to do it all is a mystery.

While this sort of thing is going on, the Web will remain as alive as ever. Nuts and maggots to the doomsayers.
