Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Posted by Rupert Goodwins

Let nobody think we're computer fixated here at ZDNet. We have many outside interests and hobbies, and care deeply about the culture of the world around us. For example, the landscape of Britain enthrals and excites many here, especially the hidden history of place names. Take a look at the list of amusing UK locations -- together with maps -- at http://www.jump-around.com/tools/place-names.php, which ZDNet tech team ubergeek James Cohen put together. Who could resist sending a postcard from Breasty Haw, or hanging out at Bell End?

But it has been pointed out that it's a good thing the UK doesn't have a Microsoft or an Intel, both of whom regularly name projects after notable places. They have mighty mountains like Whistler or Blackcomb: we have Snatch House, Bummers Hill and Dicken-Dyke. Mind you, coming from a country that invented Benny Hill and the saucy postcard, it could yet be our saving grace. I'll suggest it to ARM next time we meet -- the last processor announced was called the SC200. Imagine the coverage if it was called Nest of Fannich.
