Energy company promises millions to customers for virtualization

Posted by Rupert Goodwins

[Live from VMWorld, Los Angeles]

Green says:

"Something I thouught I'd never do at VM World, bring on Roland Risser, the director of Energy Conservation at Pacific Gas and Electric"

He's announcing the first power company centre for energy optimisation via viritualization,. He'll give customers a cheque for every server they unplug – between 300 and 600 dollars – with more on top for the cooling load reduction. In total, between $750 an $1350 for every server removed. We have a cap on the incentive per customer – 4 million dollars. Saves us money to reduce energy use rather than purchase new generation capacity, but it also reduces environmental burden. Nothing is as good as increased energy efficiency.

That translates in total for server consolidation to around 8 billion kilowatt hours. All the heating and coolinng of New England for year
