Let's hope Amsterdam's Linux interest is not Double Dutch
It's heartening to see so many large Dutch public sector organisations looking at open source.
I should stress that it is early days, and certainly too early to know their Linux projects will be a success.
But in extending their options away from a purely closed shop (with Microsoft) Amsterdam, The Hague and the other eight are surely moving in the right direction.
The only real question is, how serious are these city councils at making open source work?
A successful open source project must have both the skills and top-level commitment in place. A Linux project without the will to make it work will fail.
One wonders, in the light of the Linux U-turns by previously optimistic Newham and Birmingham, how serious our Dutch colleagues are about it.
Could it be another attempt to scare Microsoft into cut-price offerings?
