Shadow Chancellor gets it on IT

Posted by Rupert Goodwins

OK, breaking news.

Tomorrow at 9am, George Osborne, the Opposition shadow chancellor, is going to make a speech at the Royal Society for the Arts. I've got an advance copy here, and although the rules of the game are that it doesn't get quoted until the speech is made, it makes fascinating reading.

In it, we learn that Osborne started using Firefox after a visit to Mozilla HQ, he knows how many friends Barak Obama has on Myspace, he thinks wikis are cool, he understands what an open source strategy is and most importantly that he intends to bring much more open source software and open standards to government. In fact, he goes on about open source at length: the thing reads almost embarrasingly like the blog posting of a new and fervent convert to the cause.

It's a landmark speech for the open source community, and will cause much misery - even if there are soothing words for Microsoft in the middle.

We'll be reporting it fully tomorrow morning. Stay tuned.
