Did you know? How to start a discussion

Posted by Karen Friar

Whether you want to ask "Does religion do more harm than good?" or "Where's the cheapest place to buy memory?", try the ZDnet Forums.

You can start debates or tap the collective wisdom of fellow members by going to the ZDNet Forums page. Just click on the "Start new Discussion" link and complete the "Post your Discussion" box.

You can even set an alert to to be told when someone replies to the post.

Every contribution is published, and we'll highlight some of our favourites across the site. Discussions are a great way to raise your profile.

The link to kick off a thread is there on all the individual forum pages, such as Software Forum, so you can get going if inspiration hits you while you're reading. Why not take a look, and try it out now?

I like the way the forums, are linked into the comments from news/newsblog posts. Yet if there was some kind of symbol that indicated when a thread was linked to a story rather than an indepentant forum post, it would be easier to browse.

Another little problemis there is no 'report thread' feature, which explains why there are some advert type post littering the forums.

That's a good suggestion about marking a difference between discussions depending on where they originate. We'll bear it in mind as we keep looking at how to improve the Community site. So thanks for your feedback--and keep the comments coming in.

Reporting dodgy posts throughout the site is also something we're putting our mind to. For now, anyone who sees a Forum entry that they think is inappropriate can send a message to me, either via internal Community messaging or at Community.manager@zdnet.co.uk.
