IDF stop press

Posted by Rupert Goodwins

In a round table with Mooly Eden, head honcho of mobile at Intel, I asked "When will X86 architecture reach the performance per watt of XScale??" - in other words, when will Intel have a chip that can go into handhelds, mobiles and the like which can run mainstream Windows (and, um, OS X...) code but have the power requirements of the embedded stuff?

"Wait 24 hours - I don't want to steal the thunder of the keynotes over the next two days." He went on to say that such a chip would have fewer performance features such as speculative execution and other architectural differences, but would fit into the promised performance and power enhancements that Intel have predicted in the past. Watch the UMPC announcements to come.
