Dell set to offer Ubuntu?
Dell will make an announcement this afternoon on offering pre-installed Linux on its systems. Currently you have no choice - it's Windows or Windows. But that looks set to change, with an announcement due today. We know Dell is contemplating offering pre-installed Linux. Additionally, in the last 24 hours:
Several sources told desktoplinux.com that Dell would choose the Ubuntu distribution, version 7.04 - otherwise known as Feisty Fawn, to be pre-installed on its e-series Dimension desktop and Inspiron laptop.
Secondly, when I spoke to Dell this morning, it refused to confirm that Ubuntu was its final decision. Dell told me to wait for an announcement it would make this afternoon.
So it looks like there is some good news for Linux fans on the way. We'll let you know as soon as Dell says anything.
One note to remember though - what Dell does to benefit US customers, doesn't automatically mean will be available in the UK.
We'll wait and see.
