Information Commissioner to demand greater powers

Posted by Tom Espiner

Richard Thomas is going to ask Parliament that he be given the power to force organisations to submit to inspections and audits from his office, the ICO, reports Out-Law.com.

The ICO can currently inspect an organisation to check its compliance with the Data Protection Act, but only with the permission of that organisation.

Thomas warned last year that we in the UK are "sleep-walking into a surveillance society". Parliament's Home Affairs Select Committee is currently conducting an investigation into Britain's surveillance society.
