Plusnet now minus webmail

Posted by David Meyer

Whoops! Plusnet's little spam problem has resulted in the ISP's entire webmail service being taken offline. Indefinitely. Any of you folks experiencing this joy?

"Following a faull [sic] audit of our @Mail based Webmail service we have identified some minor security vulnerabilities that it is not possible to patch. While these potential vulnerabilities have not been exploited we are not prepared to compromise on customer security so we are immediately taking our Webmail service offline," says the update. Fair enough, but ouch.

More info on this ongoing saga can be found here.

What plusnet are apparently not revealing is that it seems it is not just their webmail service which was hacked.

Our private non-plusnet email address (nothing to do with plusnet webmail) stored by plusnet as part of our account details and supplied to plusnet for account contact purposes appears also to have been harvested and began receiving spam at the weekend.

If plusnet, a leader with years of experience in the internet industry and filled with experts on internet security, are unable to keep personal details secure, what hope does the government have with the ID cards.

I wonder if plusnet will offer a free month to compensate for the inconvenience to customers of dealing with any fallout from their security weaknesses.
