Forget Vista--here comes Vienna
Microsoft says it's planning to release the next update to Windows--known internally as version 7 and formerly code-named Vienna--within three years or so. Current version Vista ran into so many delays and shifts in direction that it took more than five years to arrive. And it could be five months--the end of the year--before SP1 for Vista emerges.
While Microsoft says most people are pleased with Vista, I've heard and seen reports of users sticking to XP while they work out what to do.
So how does the news affect that decision making? Or will it have no impact at all?

Keeping the 'It's Microsoft, so it will be delayed..' argument to one side, there are many good aspects of the Vista OS. The main issue (especially to businesses) is the serious lack of device driver support prior to launch.
Even now, 7 months after the launch of Vista, some hardware manufacturers are still working on the driver software for their devices (or have given up on older kit), or merely Vista compatible software updates such as VPN clients.
I hope lessons will be learnt well in advance of the 'Vienna' release.
When I first tried Vista late last year, it responded like a donkey on valium, I them decided to use the 64 bit version on a new machine, big mistake, the lack of drivers and software compatability was and still is a big issue with the 32 bit release, but with 64 bit, it is a nightmare.
Rumour has it that Vienna will be predominantly 64 bit, if it is god help us all.
I wonder if Microsoft hope to stimulate a little more enthusiasm from hardware and software vendors by this announcement ????
Don't hold your breath.
