Telco 'finds' its IT systems
Jo Best found out yesterday that in trying to trim down its IT setup, Telstra has actually discovered between 130 and 150 systems it didn't know it had.
Can you imagine if a business didn't know of over 100 of its IT systems? I know you can lose a few patchcords, but a hundred systems?
The words inventory and management spring to mind.

Thanks for sharing; always interesting to get an inside view of telecommunications. I know that as crazy as it sounds, this actually seems to occur regularly throughout the industry. I spent a few years with a broadband telco provider and inventory management was not a strength. I think so much of it has to do with the speed of technology as telcos implement the newest equipment and much of what they had ends up in some forgotten corner/closet. I worked on several projects where we found live equipment in building scheduled for demolition (which would naturally throw a wrench in any project plan we had). Entrepreneurial asset/inventory managers have a great potential market by targeting the telco industry.
