OOXML: ISO says 'No' for now
Microsoft Office Open XML has failed to gain enough votes to become an ISO standard, according to the International Organisation for Standardisation.
Microsoft failed to reach two specific milestones: it failed to gain a two thirds majority of positive votes from JTC1, while also failing to gain a quarter or less of negative votes from all of the national bodies. According to ISO, the OOXML specification received 53 percent positive votes, while it failed narrowly with the negative votes, receiving 26 percent.
The next stage in the process will be a ballot resolution meeting in Geneva in February, where ISO will attempt to reach consensus on possible modifcations to the document.
