The Wow ends now

Posted by David Meyer

Yesterday I took delivery of a NAS drive (geeky, yes, but surprisingly useful in the home and, at only 100 squids for half a terabyte, pretty cheap). Since I was busy mucking around with my backed up data anyway, I decided to take the opportunity to do something I've been planning for months...

Adios, Vista.

And hello again, XP. Yes, it's a schlep to install you. Yes, you have your quirks. But you're reliable and you don't always second-guess everything I say I want to do. You get on so well with my old friends (particularly my scanner) and you don't have a problem with my (occasional) gaming habit.

Sure, your younger sister is arguably prettier, but - don't tell her I said this - there's not that much going on upstairs with her. Frankly, she's got some growing up to do, and I was an idiot to leave you behind at all.

It was just the lure of the new, but I recognise my mistake now. Thank you for taking me back.

Welcome back (to the rolling green background).

On another note, I've been searching for a new reasonable sized & priced NAS for sometime. I can find usb storage by the truckload, but seems that when I goto order a NAS they suddenly appear out-of-stock. Some kind of conspiracy to stop me backing up all my machines, i reacon. :)

Well, what I bought was a Freecom 500GB (well, 460-odd GB to be precise) Ethernet/USB2.0 drive, so that's pretty much the best of both worlds for me - not sure what your needs are though...

Thanks for the info David.
Previously I was hunting for something around the 200GB - 250GB mark to allow me to backup 4 PCs. But checking around this certainly will suit my needs and with a great deal of room for future 'expansion'.

Cheers

I know - it's incredible how much storage you can get for your buck these days. Of course, a few years down the line we'll be laughing at this puny half-a-terabyte toy!

I have just bought a 1.5TB drive. a Western Digital MyBook World Edition with 10/100/1000 ethernet, for backing up at a fantastic price 0f £261 from www.dabs.com. You can also split the drive to make a RAID1 drive. The back up software is so easy to use and the backups take place without any trouble whatsoever. I ordered on a Sunday at about 4pm and received the drive on Monday at 0930am - now that is what I call service.
