Solar server farm

Posted by Tom Espiner

An interesting article in CNN Money gives details of a Californian server farm that is not connected to the US national grid, but derives all of its energy directly from the sun.

The article fails to mention that AISO.net has been relying on solar energy for the past ten years, but it's pretty cool nevertheless. Or hot, depending on your standpoint.

Solar power may be a viable solution to power problems in countries which get a lot of sun, but it would take a very efficient set of solar panels to make a dent in the British Isles' datacentre power needs.

However, with more power-efficient blades becoming popular, and forward leaps in solar panel technology, perhaps we'll see more environmentally friendly datacentres in the future.

That's if we're still above water.
