Holiday Shopping Scams Targeting Mobile
By Eric Everson, Founder MyMobiSafe.com
Today is the illusive “Hack Monday” which always follows the Black Friday holiday shopping kickoff. Every year on this day there is a rise in scams and malware directed at holiday shoppers and this year is no exception.
What many are finding is that the mobile community is a hot target. Scammers are offering bargain basement prices on the latest cell phones and accessories and buyers should beware. If the price looks too good to be true, then it probably is! Think realistically, there is no way that iPhone online only costs $39.99. Don’t become prey to scam sites trying to obtain your personal information.
Reputable sellers are the best place to turn for holiday shopping for all mobile devices. I’m not saying that you won’t be able to snag a great deal for a handset on EBay, but make sure you feel confident in your seller first.
While iPhone scams are hot right now just in time for holiday shopping, mobile snoopware is coming on very strong too. With snoopware programs capable of turning your cell phone into a remote monitoring device (activating microphones and/or cameras to record you or your communications) all cell phone owners should exercise additional caution around this time of year. Do not open any unrecognized text messages as malware could be embedded.
I’ll continue to share tips to keep the mobile community safe throughout the holiday shopping season.
Cheers,
