Developing an embedded Native Forth micro in a XILINX FPGA

What it looks like in hardware & on the screen...

The following 2 photo's show the PC linked to the XILINX Spartan 3E Starter board and the Starter board in close-up. The set-up is very simple the Starter board requiring only a power supply, which comes with it, a USB link to the PC, by means of which the Starter board is programmed, and an RS232 connection to the PC's serial port which talks to Hyper terminal on the PC.

Prior to hardware testing all testing was done via simulation, and simulation is the best way of locating bugs if not the quickest way to test for them.....

The ROM code was 'hand assembled' on coding sheets and tested as the project progressed. This is a typical sheet showing the Forth header and the start of the code field. Note the yellow marker which highlights the branch for an 'IF' statement, a useful reminder to go back and fill in the jump constant !
