Mixed Signals

Any sufficiently advanced information is indistinguishable from noise

Morning has broken on Mobile World Congress...

... and we´re in the press room.

The wi-fi in the press room is as good as always, so I´m on the wired computers. Which have Spanish keyboards, with backslash and @ signs well hidden. The first swearing of the day has begun.

But you don´t care about that. You might care that Qualcomm, Huawei and Telefonica have successfully tested HSDPA on 900 MHz - the original GSM frequencies, which provide better in-building and rural coverage than the 2100 MHz used so far. The companies say that this makes for more economical roll-out of 3G data, because operators need fewer base stations to cover low-density areas, and I´m sure they´re right.

You also might care that Sony Ericsson has announced the Xperia X1, its first Windows Mobile phone. Haven´t seen one yet, but it looks a fairly standard top-end WM phone from the specs; the VGA screen and 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera may be a bit better. David will be writing that up just as soon as he gets out from his briefing schedule (Probably April, from the look on his face), and I´m off to Nokia...
