Throwing caution to the wind.....

Posted by ryanpothecary

Looking at the results of the Server OS reader survey raised an eyebrow or two in our offices recently.

The first question regarding the number of servers you guys run was surprising with 22% running over a hundred servers, I’m surprised you had the time to fill in the survey questions ! We understand that IT platforms evolve as businesses change and grow, and few companies I’ve talked to wouldn’t benefit from a little consolidation to their infrastructure.

Also on the survey I was concerned by the amount of Windows Server 2000 still running legacy systems as I’m sure you are if you’re running these systems. Talking to IT Managers who face this scenario it tends to be one of either lack of support from Application providers or dependency on legacy Hardware. I guess most of you are too busy running 100+ servers and coping with day to day issues and lack of resource to do the things that you’d like to do.?

And I suspect it’s this fact which gave us the most surprising answer which is that 41% of you have no plans to use Windows Server 2008.

What are the real reasons behind this?

Microsoft have been in the server business since 1993 and I’ve got to admit have made a fair few mistakes in its time and this is why when speaking to IT Managers at any size of business they take a very cautious view on new releases. Windows Vista really didn’t help.
Waiting a year or until Service Pack 1 arrives might give you the peace of mind you want but perhaps leaves you catching up with your competitors or perhaps implementing solutions that could have been done differently using Windows Server 2008?

I’d encourage you to at least look at the new features and see how they could fit into projects that you might be doing in the next year.
I can only talk of our own experiences in using Windows Server 2008 and we’ve found it great to work with and the features have been beneficial to our business.

We’ve still got lots to learn about of course, so I'd be really grateful to hear of your experiences in using Server 2008 or perhaps why your not going to be using it at all. Cheers..
