Problem with Notepad++

Posted by Jake Rayson

Well, to be more precise, this is probably my problem with Notepad++, the venerable open source Windows text editor.

I can’t open HTML files. As a web designer & builder, this is a bit troublesome. Luckily, Notepad++ will open SHTML files, which is what I’m working on currently.

I think it probably has something to do with The Registry, that great black hole/box which sits light years away from my Known Universe. As such, I have done little to tackle the issue…

Hi Jake, if you can open shtml files in notepad++, you should also be able to other types of text files in it. Its just windows hasn't associated any text editor with that types of file.

This problem can be fixed in your n++. Just go to Preference, and in the File association tab you will see your favourite types of files there.

Thanks for the comment -- alas it doesn't work :(

If I right-click on the file and use Open with Notepad++, it doesn't.

If I go into Notepad++ and go File > Open…, select the HTML file, still nothing happens.

I think that somewhere along the line I’ve confused Windows with my multiple text editors (Notepad++, Notepad2, Notepad++ Portable etc.!)

Thanks for the suggestion tho :)

You've probably already tried this but can you re-establish the association between Notepad++ and .HTML files?

Double-click on the HTML file from within windows explorer whilst holding the [ALT] key down. This should pop a dialog box - an option on this should read "Opens with" - hit the change button beside that and either select Notepad ++ or browse to the exe.

Hope that helps and I'm not teaching to suck eggs.

Hi Pat, yep, tried that a while back. It's interesting, in an irritating way, because even when associated with an HTML file, Notepad++ comes to the fore yet refuses to open it. Which is why I'm thinking it's a system ting&hellip

Try Geany? It uses Scintilla also, but not the registry black magic.
