CIO's and Green Data Center

Posted by rohit.mishra@evangelists.in

There's a lot that CIO's can do to make the data centers green. The very basic step is to have a green approach towards IT operations and services. The implementation process would include strategies like,
Consolidating the servers that would result in less consumption of power.
Virtualization of servers, storage, desktop, applications, etc, thus controlling component sprawl.
Ultra efficient and multi-core servers which are far more efficient.
Adopting ILM, MAID, data de-duplication, etc to optimise the storage.
Having optimum layout design of data center through hot aisle/cold aisle layout, power management, distribution of power racks, etc.
Green energy sources of energy like solar, hydel, wind, wave, etc.
With the adoption of such strategies CIO's can align their IT and financial goals with ecological attitude.
