Vista SP1 Installed, Working OK So Far

Posted by J.A. Watson

The installation of Vista SP1 completed normally on my Lifebook S6510, and it seems to be running normally for the time being. I'm not getting my hopes up too high yet, because this was basically the way it looked the last time I tried it, until it suddenly started BSOD crashing, failing to boot and such. But so far, it might be better.

I have also installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 (Hardy Heron), and Mandriva Spring 2008, so I have a three-way boot selection now. Interestingly, they compare pretty well on boot speed, all three take approximately 35 seconds to boot up to the Login prompt, and another 35-40 seconds to log in and get stable, so each of them is ready to use in less than a minute and a half. Not bad.

However, Vista is still displaying one symptom that I find irritating, which the other two don't have. Sometimes, in the middle of starting or running a program, it sort of "stops", thrashes around on the disk for a bit, if I try to do anything with the window it adds "Not Responding" to the title bar, and then after anywhere from 15 to 45 seconds, it just continues on its merry way as if nothing had happened.

Anyway, the good news is, Vista SP1 is running, I have reinstalled the Fujitsu Shock Sensor Utility which was preventing it from installing, and so far there have been no crashes, BSODs or the like.

Fingers still crossed.

Update: On rebooting after installing the Fujitsu Shock Sensor Utility, Vista announced that it was blocking that program from starting because of "known potential problems" with it. I then installed the update available from the Fujitsu Support web site, then rebooted, and it now starts up normally.
