Skype "Back Door" - Still No Comment

Posted by J.A. Watson

Skype's strategy regarding the "back door" monitor rumors is clear - and consistent with everything else they do. Don't say anything, and it will die down. Well, here's hoping that in this case they are wrong. Why? Because I don't think they should be able to promote their product by claiming it is "secure", with encryption, proprietary source code, and whatever else, but then not be willing to answer the simple question as to whether there is a back door for monitoring Skype calls, and they are handing out the keys to that door to other parties.

Of course it is true that our electronic communications can almost always be monitored one way or another. In that respect, this would be nothing new. But that's not the point here. It is much more of an issue of honesty with customers and misleading claims. So it will be added to my list of reasons not to use or recommend Skype, and I will continue asking the question from time to time, until a definite answer comes out.
