The trials of a long-term mac user

What you DON'T get with the new MacBooks

Posted by utzy

Whoa - the new silver beasts sure are a solid release. I popped into the apple store in Cambridge on the first afternoon after the keynote and there they were all lined up with the MacBook Pros all out of stock already. And picking them up you can see how they have really improved the construction of these models, tight finish good lid closing and sleek lines abound. Given a I am Macbook Air user these days the weight of the Pro machine was very noticeable as unlike the new MacBooks the pro machine gained a little weight.

What a buyer has to choose from now is more broad range of options as Apple are still selling the MacBook White as they now call it for £719 pounds, the new Macbook Silvers are from £949 and the new pro are £1399 which is now £100 more than an Macbook Air. Be aware though and Apple has a habit of doing this that quietly that you no longer get :

Video out cable now mini port to VGA or DVI
Apple Remote

So that adds another £35 pounds to the cost and the cable for the mini ports are not out for a while so if you use your new Mac for presentation you wont be able to hook it up to a screen/projector just yet.

PS Avoid the new 17 inch if you can it has still to be refreshed and is priced the same wait till new year for the new 17 inch black and silver incarnation.
