Mobiles for small businesses...

Posted by James B

How many small businesses have found that it is beneficial to sign up to one of the business tariffs offered by the main operators as opposed to sticking to using your personal tariff? what advice have you received?

And when your contract period expires - how many people are happy to remain out of contract? you miss out on the latest upgrade but it means you can switch at anytime.... any thoughts?

I am increasingly convinced that a lot of small businesses could save a load of cash by managing their mobiles differently - but I am not sure that the operators are actively promoting where you could save money (after all - why reduce their income from a good customer!)

Anyone got any tips for how to manage mobiles if you run your own small business?

It is best to find a Business Focused local dealer who will advise on the best tariff packages and then monitor the performance of this tariff for you; suggesting changes as appropriate. With a good dealer there will be a contract commitment but this will not prevent tariff changes within the contract period.
Managing the contract is important:
In the good old days when the market was growing it was logical to subsidise new users as the subsidy was helping to grow the market. Now we are in a mature or even contracting market (approx 70 million live SIMs) the subsidy is no longer paid for by growth. So, who is paying – the existing customer base.
This means that if there were no subsidies, the cost of use would be able to fall.
As the Networks are still offering subsidies it is therefore good sense to either have new hardware each year or discuss this with your dealer and negotiate a payment in lieu of hardware; many will be happy to oblige, by way of a “hardware fund” to be used for purchases during the year or to reduce your mobile’s running costs.
