What makes an e-book ? Now the Nintendo DS enters the fray...
I suppose in the end the screen will prevail and in generations from now we will accept ultra e-ink is as good as print on paper, we will herald the notes, search, comment and download facilities love indexes and dictionaries but for the time being it seems to be just another gizmo in the laptop bag - any thoughts dear colleagues?

Well I suppose I do love a real book, I'm not going to worry if i'm drinking a cup of tea over it as any slipups will just lend the book a bit of character! I have recently bought an acer one net book and If there is no reading material around then it's very useful for reading online articles. It does go quick.
Who knows, the e-book may go the way of the mini disk, plenty around but no one really talks about it.
yes I was thinking of the mini disc but at least you record record on it. Ever tried to scan books to an e-reader very messy, who buys that many films for the Sony playstation portable, but with the publisher throwing books into the download store just a matter of time. Phrase not likely to use just yet oooh can you lend me your e reader I love those books, give it back next week promise
Good point, part of the joy of a good book for me is being able to lend it out to someone, nobody will want to do that with an e-book! I do hope we can carry on reading paperbooks in a sustainable way. Hemp would be ideal just like they do with the US dollar.
As for the mini disk, sony really shot themselves in the foot with that one. Just as they developed MDs with around 30gb capacities, they bring out the PSP with a new universal mindisk format! If the psp had stuck with minidisk things may have been different. We may have even seen vaio laptops with MD storage.
Can these e-books read PDF/office type docs?
