Google Chrome coming out of beta

Posted by Rupert Goodwins

According to Steve Gillmor on Techcrunch, Google vp Marissa Mayer has announced that the company's Chrome browser is coming out of beta, just three months after it was unveiled. This is a truly astonishing burst of speed from a company that's happy to leave headline services such as GMail in beta for years, and is most likely to indicate how keen everyone is to get the browser out there through the sort of channels that aren't comfortable with non-production quality software.

Still no real news on the timetable behind Mac or Linux versions, but there the commercial imperative is a lot lighter - although the appeal of a Chrome (well, Chromium)-fronted lightweight Linux distribution for PC OEMs is not to be denied.
