Palm launches its own app store
Technically, Palm now has two mobile app stores - one for the ageing Palm OS, and the other for Windows Mobile. Amusingly, this means Palm has beaten Microsoft to the punch - Redmond still hasn't gotten its act together enough to launch a proper WinMob app store. Methinks it will do so pretty soon, though.
We can also, hopefully, expect to see the successor to the Palm OS - the Access Linux Platform (ALP) - make a proper appearance early next year. I've been to a few 3GSMs/Mobile World Congresses now, and Access (ex-PalmSource) has always been there saying "almost ready". But this time it's make or break.

This is further good news for the mobility industry. Increased competition amongst developers can only lead to more and more advanced applications, while also keeping prices down. However, Palm should definitely note the criticism that Apple has come under of late with its App Store. Applications here are ranked in terms of popularity, and a lot of the most popular applications (and therefore those listed on the first few pages), don’t really serve much point. The problem is that there’s great demand out there for more useful and innovate business-focused applications, and many already exist, but people aren’t necessarily aware of them. By placing greater emphasis on these applications and affording them the exposure they warrant, Palm can succeed where others have failed and cash-in on this demand.
