Prompt Updates from Ubuntu

Posted by J.A. Watson

I have just gotten the Firefox 3.0.5 update from Ubuntu. That's pretty impressive speed, it has only been available from Mozilla for a few days. I have noticed that they seem to have been even quicker with updates than before, since their 8.10 release. Of course, for security patches that can be particularly important.

The only thing that I have noticed that Ubuntu is still significantly behind the others on is OpenOffice. They apparently have decided not to change to OpenOfiice 3 until the 3.0.1 release, which is now scheduled for mid-January. It does, however, seem a bit odd to me that they are still on OpenOffice 2.4.1, rather than updating to 2.4.2. In any event, for those Ubuntu users who are getting impatient and want to get OpenOffice 3.0 right now, I wrote up some instructions on how to do that at the beginning of November.
