Speculation hangs over Dell Ireland
Michael Dell had a meeting with the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Ms. Mary Coughlan to talk about the future of the Dell facility in Limerick which currently employs around 4,500 people, according to the Dell web site.
The meeting has immediately prompted speculation that the plant is under threat from closure or at least the loss of 2,000 to 3,000 jobs.
The office of the Irish minister, Mary Coughlan, did confirm that Dell had told her that, “it was pushing ahead with its cost saving plan [and[ weakening demand and associated cost pressures continue to put pressure on the company to implement its new strategy”.
So far, no-one is saying anything firm about that. Both the minister’s office and Dell’s have confirmed that talks took place and that is about it.
In May last year, Dell set off on a plan to cut the workforce by 10 percent which was a target it said it reached.
In November this year, the company announced offering some of its workforcearound the world unpaid leave to cut costs.
We contacted Dell for comment about the speculation and told ZDNet UK, “we have nothing to say at this time”.
