Sony Ericsson wants, can't have, PSP phone

Posted by David Meyer

Hot on the heels of Sony Ericsson's worrying results (further and further into the red we go) comes a rumour that the phone manufacturer approached one of its joint-venture daddies, Sony, to ask if they might possibly, pretty-please, use the PlayStation/PSP brand for some gaming-oriented mobiles.

"No" was, apparently, the answer. It seems Sony wants the user experience on a PSP phone to be as good as that on an actual PSP. Madness.

Actually, I think Sony were probably right to do this.

The mobile phone gaming experience is still a way off from the like of PSP or Nintendo DS level and by rushing in all they are likely to do is spoil the PSP brand in the longer term.

I agree with you - my "Madness" did not, I guess, read as intended (i.e. I think they're absolutely right).

Of course, there's an alternative: rather than release a good phone that's a cheap PSP, release a good PSP that's a cheap phone.
