Which Netbook ? Help !

Posted by utzy

I want to buy a netbook for my wife, she wants Windows XP (Vita chokes these things) and needs to hook it up to a data projector. I really like the Compaq 700 but cant find any info on the expansion port and whether a cable exists to a vga out. There are so many of this mini books now and some of them seem really awful, as a Mac user I am out of my depth and as Apple seems for some reason to be holding off a netbook in favour of the air not sure where to go. Any thoughts my fellow Zdnet people.

thanks

Utz

Utz, have you looked at the HP 2133 Mini Note? I know that it has a standard external VGA connector, and I just got an advert with a huge price cut on it here in Switzerland. It has a VIA CPU, rather than the typical Intel Atom for these things, if that matters to you. The promotion I got offered it with the typical Vista Business / XP Professional downgrade combination.

In fact, the price was so low (below 500 Swiss francs) that I will probably order one just because I've been wanting to get my hands on some sort of netbook for quite a while. If it arrives before you have to make a decision, I'll let you know what I think.

I'd agree with JW on this one. I took the HP2133 (on loan from HP) out to Microsofts PDC with Vista on it (I upgraded the memory to 2GB) and I was pretty happy with it.

The build quality feels superb, but depending on the exact model you may want to watch for the screen resolution. It comes with 1280x768 display rather than the normal netbook 1024x600 resolution which can be a bit tiring to read, while you can change windows DPI to fix this you might then find various applications don't quite get their screens pixel perfect.

It's also a little on the heavy side compared to say the original 701 eee which I use at home for web browsing on the sofa.
