ZManda puts SME backup in the cloud

Posted by Colin Barker

ZManda on Monday launched cloud computing-based backup and recovery software for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

ZMands Cloud Backup (ZCB) is designed to be easy to configure and use, the company said, and will provide backup and recovery for Microsoft Exchange and SQL Servers, based applications. It will allow users to not only run the software on their own systems but will also back up an entire Windows environment to a public storage cloud such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3), the company said.

The company said that the software backs up files, applications, databases, networked devices and the Windows system state, including Active Directory. According to Henry Baltazar, storage analyst for The 451 Group, “SMBs will increasingly turn to secure offsite, cloud-based backup and recovery services such as Zmanda to protect their business critical applications and data.”

ZCB’s “basic service” will cost a one-time fee of $50 charge for each Windows server protected and then $0.20 per GB per month for storage used and data transferred into the storage cloud.

Higher levels of usage allowance will be available, the company said and you can find out more details here.
