random gripes from the chalkface
i have no intention of maintaining a regular series of blogs. this is purely an excuse to rant, vent off, or otherwise comment on various things that irk me. an 'grumpy old man' blog, if you like...

still waiting..
A quick look at my bank account tells me that I have not been billed for the ordered goods, which were ordered on 4th Feb. & a call to the company in question assured me that the goods would be despatched on 19th Feb...
well, here we are, 2nd March, and further calls to the company in question once again has led to nothing - a promised callback amounted to my sitting by the phone (not really, since there's a handset on every floor, but you know what I mean)
this had me thinking - what if this company treats their corporate customers the same way? On this occasion, I'm making a private purchase, but what's to stop me making a similar purchase for my workplace? If the customer service I've recieved (or not...) is anything to go by, I know I won't be using this service for work...
well done to the company supplying parts for customers of a very large PC manufacturer - you've just lost a potential repeat customer, and quite possibly lost D**l a customer too!
rant over - I'm off to have a soothing coffee!

Hi there! That kit should already be in your laptop supporting the current hard drive. It's just a matter of loosening a few screws.
Hi Roger. yes, there is a caddy supporting the current drive, but the 2nd bay is empty, a fact I only discovered AFTER buying a new HDD.
What I was hoping to do is install Ubuntu on the new HDD, and leave my Vista drive alone (as far as possible) - my knowledge of Linux is very basic (limited to reading others' posts about it, and dabbling with a live disc), and I have a few programs that will not run on anything other than Windows, so I need to keep the Vista for now.
the trouble is, as I found too late, there is no 2nd caddy, which is where I've gotten stuck.
I could remove the Vista drive & install Ubuntu on the 2nd drive, but it's gonna be messy having to swap the drives in the caddy every time I want to boot up a different OS...
As an addendum to my blog, I had further conversations with the 'company' last night; after waiting on the customer service line for about 15 minutes, I tried a different option (talk to a representative) got through straight away; apparently they are having problems getting stock from 'the very large PC manufacturer'. they are looking into it, & have promised a call-back sometime today...
It irks me that the 'major PC manufacturer' directed me to the smaller company in order to buy the caddy in the first place, especially as it seems they end up supplying the good in the end!!!
*sigh* its too early in the morning to make much sense just now, I hope you get the drift of what I'm trying to say!
Azonei I hear you.....If a a manafacturer's going to put in a second drive bay, then why not supply the caddy? I think it's a sign of how tight the margins for profit really are!
