Windows 7 'Brain Dead Edition' (aka Starter Edition)

Posted by J.A. Watson

I've just read an excellent blog about Microsoft's plans to try to hoodwink consumers with "Windows 7 Starter Edition" on netbooks. It is clear that Windows 7 can't compete with Linux on netbooks in either price or features, so what MS is planning to do is cut the price on a lobotomized version, in order to at least get into the ballpark on price, and hope that the majority of consumers are even more stupid than their operating system and won't realize what is going on. To follow their thinking to its logical conclusion, what should then happen is that the consumer gets fed up with the lemon they have purchased, and will then give Microsoft even more money to "upgrade" to a non-crippled version of Windows 7 - and in this case it is an even better deal for Microsoft because they certainly will charge the end user a higher price than they would have charged the netbook OEM in the first place, and they don't have to share any of this money with the OEM.

Of course, the "upgraded" Windows 7 still can't compete with a Linux installation on features (can you say "OpenOffice"? Sure, I knew you could...), so MS is apparently hoping that consumers will give them even MORE money for MS Office.

Tired of Microsoft cleaning out your wallet for you? Then just say NO to Windows and MS Office!

Much to my dismay, the sheeple will do as Castle Redmond commands.

If the "Linux Community" would band together long enough and put out a blitz "this is what Linux is" advertising campaign, it would go a long way to educate those who need it most.

But as always, it will break down into territorial fistfights over which distro and who's in charge. To my experience, many Linux users couldn't care less about others having a good and safe computing environment. Some would argue that geeks should never be put in charge of their own marketing anyway. "Free as in Freedom" might mean the world to us but it leaves everyone else scratching their heads.

And the masses shoveling money into MS Coffers.

We have no one but ourselves to blame.

I've done this marketing locally and it has been more successful than I ever imagined.

I'm finding open office works really well with vista and 7, so maybe that's a good place to start the weaning away. Get people used to open office on windows and show them that it's the same on linux and even open solaris.
