London Underground gets online departure boards

Posted by David Meyer

I just received an email from Transport for London, making me aware of its new online departure boards service for the Tube.

I have to say, it may work well but I can't see the point, unless you're hanging around outside a Tube station having a cigarette, wondering when you can steal that last puff.

Otherwise, you'll be out of mobile broadband coverage. In any case, the Tube is a fairly regular beast.

Am I missing something? Will anyone find this seriously useful?

On the same page as the tube links you also get the information for the DLR and the river serives. The problems you highlight don't effect these. Therefore, it follows that if someone was looking for the information on the river and DLR services, they might try looking for the live feeds for the tube, thinking the actual information they want about the DLR or river service might be on the same page.

I've been using this for a while. It's useful as often there are delays reported on the website but it's hard to tell the extent. Using the departure board feature allows me to see what frequency the trains are running at and then make a decision on whether to leave the office or hang on for a bit.
