BT to manage KCom's network

Posted by David Meyer

KCom Group, the Hull-based telecommunications and IT provider, has signed a network management deal with BT.

A strategic agreement between the two companies was announced on Monday. KCom will outsource the management of its fibre-access network to BT's wholesale division, and will also be able to use BT's national network to reach new customers.

Bill Halbert, Deputy Executive Chairman says, "This agreement is an important step in the transformation of the KCOM Group," said KCom deputy executive chairman Bill Halbert in a statement."It will allow us to reduce our fixed costs and capital expenditure significantly, while strengthening our competitive position and ability to grow."

KCom is something of an anomaly in the UK telecommunications market. In the early 20th century, almost all the country's municipal telephone companies grouped into what became BT — the exception being the municipal telephone company in Kingston upon Hull. As a result, Hull became the only place in the UK not covered by BT's network.

According to KCom, now that it can focus less on managing its network, the group will now focus on its managed communications business, which serves the national enterprise and public sector markets, and on its East Yorkshire customers.
