Photoshop-esque

Posted by Jake Rayson

Sumo Paint oddness

I’m not exactly ‘first to market’ with the low-down on Sumo Paint, the online image editing web application that has more than a passing resemblance to Photoshop (particularly if you hit F11 using Firefox). Version 1 was released a mere 7 months ago, and I had a quick look today. It's a full on painter’s delight, a very usable collection of tools and filters.

However, as a non-digital artist (witness the oddness above) , I can hardly do the software justice, so best have a look at the flash-only community-driven web site rankings.

I have used Picknik in the past, for minor edits to photos on my [Flickr] account, and that is also a very slick application, though designed to be more accessible for the casual user. My guess that for such casual users, these web applications are simple to use. No installation, no setup, often no registration. It does beg the question of how Free Open Source Software will fare with The Cloud, what the strategies will be.

On a slight diversion, the Open Source image editor GIMP 2.7 development release has recenlty been announced, and the new features are most welcome, in particular IMHO the on-canvas text editing. All very exciting.
