Microsoft gives Windows Mobile 6.5 a release date
The next generation of what are now called 'Windows phones' will go on sale on 6 October, Microsoft said on Tuesday.
The upgraded phone OS, launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the start of this year, will have a heavily redesigned user interface and will include a new version of the Internet Explorer Mobile browser.
Windows Mobile 6.5 will also provide integration with a hosted backup service called Microsoft MyPhone, as well as the new Windows Marketplace for Mobile application store.
According to Microsoft, the European operators Orange, Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile) and Vodafone have signed up to carry Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets, and manufacturers including Acer, HTC, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba will make phones using the OS.
ZDNet UK has asked Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone whether they will start selling Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets on 6 October, but had received no reply at the time of writing.

This is a great development!
Let’s face it; the business world revolves around the Microsoft Office suite. So having Office software available on mobile phones will be a godsend to busy individuals who are always on the move, no longer restricting them to the confines of the office. It will be particularly useful on road to important meetings as it will allow PowerPoint users to flick through slides and view notes to practice their presentations, or even edit and tweak their PowerPoint files on their morning commute or business trip.
