Fedora 12 Alpha and The Moblin User Experience
- MMS (Multi-Boot Mini-Server, Dual Atom nettop): Installed smoothly, works extremely well, and is overall very nice. It's hard to believe this is an Alpha release!
- Fujitsu Lifebook S6510: Essentially the same results as on MMS. It gets everything right, including screen resolution (1280x800), wired and wireless networking.
- ASUS N10J (Atom netbook): Seemed to take a very long time to boot the LiveCD, I had just about decided that it was hung when it started flashing the disk access light again. Otherwise, results are the same as the previous two. Screen resolution (1024x600), wired and wireless networking, and the Swiss keyboard all ok.
- HP 2133 Mini-Note (VIA CPU and Graphics): Unable to boot the LiveCD, it doesn't seem to like the Chrome 9 display adapter.
As I said, overall this is a very solid release, quite exceptional for and Alpha release. There's a lot of interesting new software in there, too, including the latest releases (sometimes still test releases) of major parts such as the Linux kernel itself, Gnome desktop and such.
As I was reading the Release Notes, I saw a mention of installing the "Moblin User Experience" on Fedora 12. I have now added that package to the Fedora 12 Alpha installation on the ASUS, and it seems to work just fine as well. That's a bit surprising, because I haven't been able to get the last few Beta releases of Moblin itself to install and run properly on any of my computers!
I still don't "get the concept" of Moblin, but at least now I have a working system to play with for a while. Maybe the light will eventually come on.
