What's Up with Moblin?

Posted by J.A. Watson

Anyone know what is going on with Moblin? They had been in a mode where they were releasing a Beta update about once a week, sometimes a bit more often. Now there hasn't been an update since 18 August, but the Download page still says "this is the weekly refresh...".

Does anyone know for sure what is going on? I would guess that either things are a lot worse than expected (which would fit nicely with the fact that I have not been able to get any of the past five or six Beta releases to boot and run consistently on this netbook), and they have decided to pull back and regroup; or, things are very good, and they have stopped issuing weekly betas while they package and prepare the first full release.

Just wondering.

To me it looks like the project is dying. I have also tried out the August 18 release, and it did not install on an Asus 1000H, wich should have worked out-of-the-box. Very strange.

I hope that some good ideas will be implemented in Ubuntu Netbook Remix (were there any???), and for the rest I fear that Windows 7 will be a success on netbooks. May be Jolicloud will be any good, I will give it a try. Here's a good article about it:

Ok, I post this once.. it didnt show. So I will try again..

First thing, the last several builds of Moblin have worked great for me. I even got my Broadcom Wifi working on them.
I asked the same question on Moblin.org a week ago about why there have been no builds since Aug 18th.. no reply.

One thing is that Ubuntu and Fedora now have Moblin versions. You can try both them out. Ubunto Moblin Remix even has daily builds going. Just google them.

Almost all the main distros say they have incorporated Moblin Technology into their upcoming releases also, OpenSuse has a project called Goblin. (Not the same as GoblinX)....

So, not sure whats going on. But rumors have been that there is some netbooks coming out in October with Moblin on them. so.. who knows..

And @ moblin.org, the version 2.0 is final now. They have also a developer 2.1 version with a nice software store included. You only don't have to pay for it....
