Flickr links photos to OpenStreetMap

Posted by Jonathan Bennett

Yahoo's photo sharing site, Flickr has announced support for OpenStreetMap data in photo tags. By adding a tag to your photo linking it to the relevant object in OSM, Flickr can retrieve details, such as the name of a feature, from OpenStreetMap and display it along with the photo.

This kind of machine-readable tagging is exactly the sort of thing the Semantic Web is meant to be built from. In this case, it's being done directly, not through an intermediate language like RDF. Whether that's a good thing or not, I don't know.
