Google Wave we're on it. And you can be, too...
We'll get back with more of our experiences as we get to grips with the salty software - so far, we know that Chrome, Firefox and IE 7/8 seem to work OK, but Opera doesn't.
We also have two Google Wave invite nominations to give away. These aren't invites - you don't get those until Google processes the nominations: "we've got a lot of stamps to lick" as Google says when excusing the delay - but they're the next best thing.
What we don't have is a good single sentence answer to the reasonable question "But what IS Google Wave?". This is where you can help - and win.
Leave a talkback to this blog post with your best one sentence description, and we'll despatch our nominations to the best two received by 5:30pm, UK time, Monday. To boost your chances, come up with the best use you can think of for Wave and include it in your post - but we'll be looking for that elusive capsule definition above everything else.
Usual rules: editor's decision is final, we'll be in contact via your community ID on Tuesday, and feel free to make multiple entries - although anything spammy will result in instant disqualification.

Google Wave: It's like real life group work with your boss able to interupt you and tell you "you're doing it wrong" at any moment and leaving again at any moment.
This set of functions though would actually be really useful for large group meetings of folks all over the place- since everything is "live" and free flowing. I see this being very useful in planning events and full net meetings.
I don't know if the trackback will work but here his my answer :

Google wave is the missing real time brick in the communication tools on the Internet.
- we had "long time" information, like shared folders, FTP, file hosting service etc., for important information which needed to be kept
- we had "medium and short time" information, like e-mail or instant messaging, for information with a short lifetime
- we have google wave now, "real time" information which can be promoted to long time information by publishing a wave

Google Wave, better than it's Mexican cousin; it's an instant-calemessengerdocumail-collaboration combobulation!
Google Wave is thι next generation killer app that combines e-mail, messenger, twitter, forums and collaboration software into one single product, they just reinvented the wheel and made it better!
PS Google Wave is in fact a tsunami that floods Twitter today with thousands of people begging for an invite, others using the rumour to get more followers ('I've got 8 invites left - retweet this message!') and apparently making the servers at Google smoke, as I too am still waiting for an invite :-)
Google Wave eliminates the distinctions between lifeless documents, messageboards, chat, IRC bots, email, wikis and more.
I hope it will let me avoid Sharepoint at work if I can demonstrate its awesomeness, but I think it might replace Exchange as well, once they have a decent email gateway for the Federation server.
Google Wave is the future. Simple.
Google says, "Wave goodbye to email, IM, forums, and wikis!"
It's the most inGENIOUS way conceived so far to have every online communication inside a ONE-UNIQUE platform that is at its BEST colaborative and OPEN source.
Google Wave massively increases communications productivity and makes not working fun!

The next big thing until the next big thing!
or
Before Wave, I knew nothing. After Wave I understand nothing.
or
Email for 20 years, IM for 15 years and Google Wave beta for the next 10 years.
Google Wave is a Tsunami of opportunities that will either allow communication to drive the internet to a new level of consciousness or will just flood us with more information than we can absorb.
Within business it provides a fantastic opportunity to deliver real-time messaging in environments that rely upon instant communication. Telephone bound Research and Marketing are obvious places where those monitoring for quality and effectiveness can inform telephone agents of issues with their engagements without interrupting the flow of conversation.
Google Wave, marketing hype for 2009.
or
Google Wave, the must have you don't need.
or
Google Wave, your internet belongs to us.

Google - Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated into the Wave.
Google Wave is the first true integration of email and messaging services which also enables inclusion of other parties after innitiation of the discussion.
The future of social networking!
wasting time chasing up myspace, facebook, twitter, & various forums? how convenient would it be to have all these, & more in one package!!

Google Wave - We All Virtually Exist...
Google Wave is a new medium for communication and collaboration combining long term document storage, real time conversation and boundless potential.
Google Wave?
Must have been that thing that just went over my head - glad it's gone. It looked messy.
hi,
seems trackback have a problem :-( i've done them from my articles (url in my first comment), and nothing happened in the trackback page
regards
Google Wave.....Surfing you to the beach of aggregation.
Harvest and reap ideas for projects in real time by remaining in said realtime sync with friends or collegues, or reverting to e-mail style comms if someone drops out or has to go offline.
Anyone can come back later and rewind a thread/meeting/conversation to the place it was and quickly refresh back to realtime.
Work together on a document as a group and be able to see who has made changes and watch editing in real time.
One day this could apply to art and music etc
Comment on developing conversation.
Correct information you think is inaccurate.
Drag and drop functionality.
Like a giant hub with long reaching tentacles, it seeks to feed on all of your collective log in details and in return offer a new level of online organisation and being.
One day you'll be dictating a document whilst you wait in your car having the results synchronised or if the connection drops then stored next to you until you are back on line, or instruct it to pay for and download a track you like the sound of into a synced file system so you can retrieve results anywhere.
Google Wave is an extensible, realtime, multi-media communication center that replaces email, IM and other communication applications.
As for the best use of Google Wave? Is there one? I mean, the software in its entirety is an innovation and combination of the different ways we communicate and share information on the web. The best use? Exchanging ideas, information and media! What Wave is for!
One of my first thoughts was to use it as a sort of SVN system. The way it keeps track of changes, the ability to pan through the history, and the real-time collaboration would work great for writing code with other people. Use the edit feature to change code and the ability to add in other comments to mark off areas of code you're currently working on. There would need to be an easy way to save the file straight to your test server, or easily download it to upload via FTP; this could be done with a gadget.
Thanks everyone - the competition is closed.
Good work, chaps. After eliminating ones that took the single sentence limit to new extremes of syntax, those that had a bit too much of the marketing hyperbole about them and those that were perhaps just a little cynical - not that there's anything wrong with that - the mighty hive mind of ZDNet UK (OK, me and a cup of coffee) are pleased to announce that the recipients of our two nominations are ctrimm and zerth. If we get more nominations, we'll parcel them out to the rest.
Well done!
felecitations to ctrimm and zerth !
Yes - sorry you didn't get it after all the hassle, fbp. You're next on the list!
just a suggestion,
why the 2 winners don't nominate the othesr. I understood they have each 8 nominate possibility, what about using 3 or 4 for zdnet comment posters ? i know it isn't an invite but it put the person at the top of the google list for next invite wave. if it's possible, i can give my mail thru MP ;-)
fred
fpb - I don't think we get nominations to hand out. The choice for 8 nominations only went out to the original 100k developers. But I could be wrong. In which case, I'll happily hand out some nominations.
Rupert - Thanks so much for the nomination! That has really made my day. I've been doing as much research on wave as I can without actually having access. Being a web developer, I'm super excited about being able to develop extensions for such an interesting platform.
If Chuck Norris could collaborate in real-time, he'd use Google Wave and then round-house kick everyone who didn't have it.
Still haven't had email addresses from the winners. Lunchtime tomorrow - or the nominations go elsewhere!
"But what IS Google Wave?"

3, Freedom of Thought.
4, The congregation of freedom.
5, The 8th wonder.
6, The answer.
7, The sixth element.
Just in case. :)
Current invitees don't get more invites, per Stephanie's recent tweet.

I PM you my email.
If i may still nail my contrary colours to the mast at this late stage, I think the Wave is making a splash with the public's imagination but I'm all at sea about what makes this more than just an advanced/next-gen gmail service. Google has pinned a lot on Wave so if it can't explain why it will be indispensable and fails to rock the boat in the comms tech market (or just breaks) then, despite all the foaming, pre-release evangelism, the tide of enthusiasm could turn and Google could be in for a soaking - with apologies for plumbing the depths of language.
