Oops-ubuntu!

Posted by Jake Rayson

I have had to abandon yesterday's plan to remove unwanted fonts and add core web fonts to /usr/share/fonts/ in Ubuntu Karmic Koala. I had a bit of an accident:

Where is my text in Firefox on Ubuntu Karmic Koala? Eh?

As you can see, no fonts whatsoever on web pages in Firefox, just lines. Apparently what was causing the problem was my adding the truetype Arial to the shared fonts folder. So I took them out and put them in /home/guest/.fonts instead. It works and everybody's mildly unhappy.

I also found Firefox agonisingly sloooow, which other people have had issues with as well. A workaround is to change the DNS to OpenDNS, a free DNS resolution service. I did this and it seems to be working fine now. An upshot is that if you use the location bar to search, you get an OpenDNS sponsored search results page, which is fair enough I guess.
