Month of Apple bugs begins

Posted by Graeme Wearden

The security researchers who promised to bring us an Apple bug a day throughout January have revealed their first vulnerability. It's a flaw in Quicktime 7 -- specifically in the rtsp:// URL handler, which handles online media streams.

According to Kevin Finisterre and LMH, a malicious hacker could use this flaw to create a buffer overload, and then execute code on a user's machine.

This has prompted a (predictably?) scathing response from some in the Apple community, who argue that the pair are acting irresponsibly and should instead notify Apple of any security problems.

Keep watching the Month Of Apple Bugs web site for more alleged Apple vulnerabilities.

Google to overtake Microsoft online

Posted by Graeme Wearden

Google is set to become the world's most visited Internet property in 2007, a crown currently worn by Microsoft.

USA Today reported, err, today that Google has already just overtaken Yahoo to sit in second place. Once the traffic from YouTube is added the top spot is surely Google's, according to Danny Sullivan, editor of the Search Engine Land blog.

Microsoft may seem an unlikely leader in the web traffic space. Obviously MSN sites like Hotmail play a big part, but another factor is all those software updates that security-conscious users keep downloading.

Ryanair critic wins web battle

Posted by Graeme Wearden

Michael Coulston, who set up a web site critical of Ryanair's business practices, has won a battle to keep www.ryanaircampaign.org.

Coulston uses the site to tell Ryanair customers how they can complain about poor service.

Ryanair had complained that the domain name infringed on its trademarks and should therefore be transferred into Ryanair's possession. However,
the World Intellectual Property Organization has now rejected this claim.

Ryanair had previously managed to force Coulston to hand over control of Ryanair.org.uk.

Apple faces 'false document' claims

Posted by Graeme Wearden

Shares in Apple dropped five percent on Wednesday amid unconfirmed rumours that federal prosecutors were looking closely at "apparently falsified" stock option documents.

Law.com reported that a three-month internal probe had turned up evidence that stock option documents had been "apparently falsified by company officials to maximize the profitability of option grants to executives."

Apple hasn't yet commented on the claims, for which Law.com doesn't provide solid proof. It attributes the claims to "individuals familiar with the case who requested anonymity"."

Chess player banned for wireless cheating

Posted by Graeme Wearden

An Indian chess player is feeling rather forked off after being caught using his mobile phone to help win games, according to Reuters.

Umakant Sharma was reportedly caught at a recent tournament when officials "discovered that he had stitched a Bluetooth device in a cloth cap which he always pulled over his ears". This let his accomplices tell him what moves to play.
