Dispatches from the Reviews Editor's desk

How dare they?

Posted by Charles McLellan

You can tell when a review product has made a good impression. After a while, you start hoping that the vendor or the PR has forgotten about it. Then you howl with anguish when they have the temerity to ask for it back.

That's happened with T-Mobile's MDA Vario II handheld/smartphone, a.k.a the HTC TyTN. It runs Windows Mobile 5.0, which shows signs of maturing nicely, but mostly it's the form factor that impresses: it has a decent-size touchscreen, yet isn't too bulky or heavy, and has a very cool slide-out keyboard that instantly flips the display into landscape mode when you engage it. The phone is HSPDA compliant, so Web pages fairly spring onto the screen when you've got suitable coverage.

You really can be a 'mobile professional' with this 3G device. The one thing I don't do is video calls -- once the great hope for the 3G networks. I tried one with my esteemed colleague Rupert Goodwins, and that was enough to put me off for life!

Still, there'll be another cool gadget (sorry, useful business tool) along soon. Of that, I'm very confident.

Welcome to the productdome

'This week, I have mostly been reviewing...'

That's the standard entry you'll probably find on this blog in future, along with rants about PR companies, product managers, couriers -- and of course the many bits of hardware and software that flow through the Reviews section on a daily basis.

In fact, this week I will mostly be working hard to make sure that the new Reviews section is present and correct and ready to provide you, the 'members', with a much-improved product evaluation experience. Let us know what you think.
