Dell: One gig good, two gig better
If you thought 1GB of memory was ample for the average personal computer, you can forget it. Now 2GB is the minimum that users should be aiming at.
At least according to Dell chief executive, Kevin Rollins, who told delegates at a conference in Shanghai on Friday: "I think they tell you maybe 1 gig [gigabyte] of memory is okay. No. Two gigs of memory would be great." More over at iTnews in Australia.

$6bn takeover of UPS giant
Hot news in the uninterruptible power supply industry is pretty rare, but on Monday American Power Conversion was snaffled by Schneider Electric for the princely sum of $6.1bn. The deal is meant to create a UPC superpower, with Schneider talking bullishly about strong future growth and global synergies.

Munich's Linux migration 'on track'
Munich's much-scrutinised migration to Linux is going well, according to the city's mayor. Christine Strobel told Heise Online that eighty percent of desktops will have moved from Windows to Linux by 2008. Strobel (who admits she's not a geek) also said she found the LiMux client easy to use, and Heise reports that other senior politicians are also impressed.
The migration is also on track to come in on budget, at 35 million Euros.

EMC's latest storage products analysed
The Register has a break-down of EMC's latest offerings, which might be useful those of you looking to upgrade your storage products. While the kit itself is interesting, it's also worth checking out the analysis of the EMC's broader strategy.
The conclusion is that companies should be able to squeeze more performance into the same space in their data centre, and also cut power costs. As we reported last week, power is becoming a crucial issue for IT managers today, especially in the data centre.

Will XP SP3 ever arrive?
Last week, we reported that Microsoft has pushed back the launch of the third service pack for XP. This decision appears to have alarmed some in the IT community, who now doubt that XP SP3 will ever ship - according to this article on PC Advisor.
But why would Microsoft decide not to ship an important update to XP users? Well, with Vista apparently failing to thrill the market, it needs all the help it can get. SP3 might just tempt XP users to sit tight.
